INSPIRATION AND TUTORIALS

Q&A with vicki boutin

Can you share a bit about your creative journey and how you first discovered mixed media and scrapbooking?

Making art has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. From colouring books to every popular craft and also in school, creating stuff has always been where I found my happy place. When my son was born (24 years ago!) I discovered Paper Crafting and it just blossomed into the perfect creative outlet. I can incorporate my love of drawing, painting, playing with patterns, photography and so much more with scrapbooking, cardmaking and art journaling.
What inspires your creativity, particularly your vibrant colours, patterns, and themes?

Inspiration is everywhere. Fashion, home decor and colour trends inspire me. I look at advertisements, in nature, on social media, in my travels and visiting my favourite shops. I always have my notebook handy to jot down ideas.
How would you describe your artistic style, and how has it evolved over the years?

The best way to describe my style is Contained Funk. I take lots of colour, pattern and mix in the mediums and the textures. Then I "contain the chaos" in shapes, pieces and repeated patterns with lots of white space. This makes the art accessible and user friendly. This has been a constant thread throughout my years of creating.

When you begin designing a new collection, what does your creative process look like from concept to finished product?

When I design I start with a theme, colour palette if applicable and a mood/inspiration board. I consider design elements needed, scale and repetition and usability. Then we test it, play with it and come up with lots of inspiration for it's use. I love product that can be used multiple ways and has creative longevity and value.
Who or what are your biggest artistic influences?

I will always be an observer and student. I am inspired by other crafters, learn on new ways to do things on YouTube and I'm constantly saving things I see online as seeds to spark my creativity.
What message or feeling do you hope people experience when creating with your products?

Art is for EVERYONE! Making is so good for the mind, body and spirit and it should be accessible and easy to adapt to your style. By providing simple tools, step by step instruction and lots of encouragement I hope to get as many people as possible making stuff. The simple act of creating brings so much joy. Do all of the Things! It's just a piece of paper and your time!
