Seth Apter’s artistic journey began in 2000 when a chance encounter with another artist introduced him to the world of mixed media. Though he had long admired art, it wasn’t until he started creating as a hobby that he truly found his passion. Over time, this passion grew into a full-time career, with Seth officially transitioning to professional artistry in 2018. His work is deeply rooted in texture, layering, and storytelling, incorporating everything from traditional art supplies to found objects and unconventional materials. Whether working on wood panels or handmade artist books, Seth embraces detail and history, making each piece a rich visual experience.

Today, Seth is an established artist, designer, and instructor with a loyal following of mixed-media enthusiasts. He actively engages with his community, sharing insights, tutorials, and creative inspiration across social media and workshops. His commitment to helping others express their unique artistic voices is at the heart of his collaboration with Sizzix. This partnership brings his distinctive abstract and textural style to a new collection of dies and creative tools, designed to encourage makers to experiment, explore, and craft in their own way. Seth envisions each product as a tool for personal expression, inspiring artists to push boundaries and make each creation their own.

Launching in June 2025, the Seth Apter collection introduces a fresh and versatile approach to die-cutting and mixed media. Featuring abstract shapes and layered designs, these products offer endless possibilities for makers of all skill levels. Developed in close collaboration with Sizzix, this collection is designed to be mixed, matched, and integrated seamlessly with existing supplies. As Seth explains, “I may have an idea of how each item can be used, but I always encourage the user to make it their own. I consider everything that a creative makes as a collaboration between the two of us.” With additional drops planned later in the year, this exciting collection is set to inspire a new wave of artistic expression.

Q&A with SETH APTER

When did you start getting interested in art and design? When did it turn into your full time profession?

My journey began in 2000 after a serendipitous encounter with an artist who introduced me to the world of art and design. Before that moment, I was an art-lover but never a maker. At first, art was simply a hobby for me. Over time, it became increasingly important and grew into a passion. By 2012, I began to seriously consider the possibility of making it a career and since 2018 I have been working as a full-time artist and designer.

What are your specialisms/what do you enjoy doing the most?

I love mixed media art because it gives me the freedom to create using any and all materials. I am as likely to use found objects and items from the hardware store as I am to use traditional art mediums. Most of my art includes layers of paint, ink, handmade marks, stamping, stitching, collage, and hand stitching. I work primarily on wood panels and in my own handmade artist books.

What or who inspires your creativity?

I am mostly inspired by two elements: place and material. My art and design are different depending on where I am while working. I live in New York City and the galleries, museums, shop windows, people, energy, and architecture all provide inspiration. When I am creating while traveling to teach, my work reflects each different location. I am also inspired by material in that much of what I make starts with one object, color, piece of paper, etc. Every creative choice after is simply a response to the step before.

Who/What are your inspirations and how do they inform the product collections you’ve created for Sizzix?

The idea behind all my design work is to offer opportunities for other makers to bring their creative vision to life. My designs for the first collection enable the user to create something that reflects their own, individual voice. They are abstract, versatile, and can be used in multiple ways – both with all the different items in the same release as well as with supplies that they already have in their own collections.

How would you love to see makers using your designs/products?

I want each maker to think of my products as a tool for them to use to express their individual voice and style. I may have an idea of how each item can be used but I always encourage the user to make it your own. I consider everything that a creative makes as a collaboration between the two of us.

How would you describe your aesthetic and how did you develop your style?

I like to say more is more. For me it is all in the details and there are always a lot of details – even though I tend to work small. My art is almost always abstract and no matter what I make or what material I use, I lean into texture, marks, words, and layers. I love to use older, original supplies as it gives my work a sense of history and story.
