Q&A with MARK MONTANO
When did you become interested in art and design?
My mother painted in her spare time and would sit me down with her with crayons and pencils and my earliest drawings are imitations of her subjects. I'm going to say 3 or 4.
My inspiration is always rooted in the past...The Victorian era has always fascinated me. Taking ideas from the past and making them modern is where this collection started.
The WHAT is the natural world, the insane colors that mother nature pairs and the structured chaos that we see every day like clouds, plants and weather. The WHO are artists that changed our perspective on how we view the world around us and challenged the status quo.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how did you develop your style?
My style is always evolving but I can say that it's deeply rooted in history with a heavy mix of pushing modern boundaries.
I think for many, and often for me, there is a fear in just starting something. You have to jump in to your projects fearlessly and get messy...it's the only way. Try something different that challenges you because you never know where that direction will take you.
Mistakes are crucial to being successful. Embrace them, learn from them and your creativity will flourish.
