The Story of the Die-Cutting Machine
Did you know?
Sizzix belongs to the Ellison family; the inventors of the first-ever consumer hand-operated die-cutting machine! We’re really proud of this history, and since then we have established ourselves as the market pioneer and leader of DIY die-cutting machines and products for the arts and crafts industry.
A little bit of history
In 1977, the first-ever consumer hand-operated die-cutting machine, the original Ellison LetterMachine, was invented in a small 2-bedroom apartment by LaDorna and Bob Eichenberg. LaDorna was an art teacher who identified a need for die-cutters in classrooms, saving teachers valuable time previously spent cutting out paper and card into letters and numbers. Ellison continues to operate within the education market, and after years of growth, success and awards, the Sizzix brand was launched in 2001 to cater to makers and the DIY market.

Our family of machines
Our family of die-cutting machines from over the years includes the Big Shot, Big Shot Plus, Big Shot Express, Big Shot Foldaway, Sidekick Starter Kit (also available in a Grey and Tim Holtz version), Big Shot Pro, and our Limited-Edition Big Shot Machine.
Our Big Shot machine is so popular that we decided to bring out limited-edition versions, our last design flew off the shelves so be sure to stay tuned for our next Big Shot limited-edition design which will be released in the new year!
By 2015 we had a full family of Sizzix Machines, and the Big Shot Express Machine was brought back to shelves due to popular demand, rebooted with more features for enhanced user experience accommodating those with limited mobility. Over the years, we’ve released over 9,000 products, and have collaborated with leading industry designers, such as our highly popular Tim Holtz collections.
To celebrate our Sizzix machines, we’ll be launching a mini-series here on the Making Journal where we’ll ask our Sizzix designers everything you want to know about their favourite machines. So, if you’re wondering which machine best suits your making needs, then come back next Tuesday for your first instalment of recommendations, tips and tricks!
