If you have Children, Grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends aged between 0 and 40 it is almost statistically impossible not to have a huge Harry Potter fan among them. I took my son (who is now 23) to buy the last three books when hey were launched... at midnight! My nine year old daughter and most of her friends are Potter crazy, she's reading the books and watching the movies in an endless loop. Half of the staff here at Sizzix are Potter nuts and they are grown-ups supposedly!
If you check the Sizzix Facebook page you will see lots of makes using our Sizzix Surfacez. This is a group of cool products designed for die-cutting and includes Mat Board, Mixed Media Board, Metallic Cardstock sets and our Texture Rolls. The texture rolls measure 12" x 48" or about 30 x 120cm and many of them Have the properties of both card and textiles.
They cut beautifully, ink fabulously and they can also be sown as they are very hard wearing. My personal favourite is the Tan Texture roll because it has that rich red oxide colour of leather and when you scrunch it...
I cut a strip of the roll (7 x 12 cm approximately) and die-cut an oval using the 100 mm wide Framelits die.
Next comes the scrunch! this is way better than a stress ball, The longer you do this for, the softer and more pliable it becomes. Now it's time to turn it into the iconic Sorting hat!
In the top-right image you can see how I manipulated it with my fingers to create the brows before securing with a little hot glue. Next I folded it to create the upper lip (bottom-left) followed by the bottom lip (bottom-right)
Using a pair of scissors I trimmed the hat into the familiar triangle shape, I cut the base in a slight arc. The tip of the hat I folded back on itself and secured with a little hot glue before folding the Scrunched oval in half (this will form the hats brim) I used some Walnut stain Distress Ink to enhance the edges and creases.
For my background, I cut an 11 x 7 cm rectangle of ivory card. I applied some Old Paper and Crushed Olive Distress Ink directly to my craft mat before spritzing with clean water. I swept and blotted my card over the ink. Next, I applied more Old Paper ink around the edges finishing with a little Vintage Photo. The stamped detail was applied with Pumice Stone Distress Ink.
The sentiment was printed onto the ivory card (Font is Mister Sinatra) before delicately inking around the edges of the base card and mounting all the elements in place.
That was fun! why not try this for the Potter fan in your life?
Thanks for stopping by, see you again soon.
Sounds like it was fun to do and it certainly looks fun too!
This was done by cutting a 7 x 12xcm strip of the tan texture roll. Hope this helps!
thanks
Yes that is the 7 x 12cm!
