DIY Christmas Gift Tags!

One of my favorite Christmas Crafts is to create my own DIY Christmas Gift Tags for presents! I can customize my homemade Christmas Gift Tags and match the colors to the gift wrap I've chosen for the year and allows me to get a little extra crafty around the holidays.

This year I have fallen in love with the Sizzix Doodle Christmas Thinlits Die Set and all of its groovy, retro icons. I chose a bright color palette to align with the retro feel of this particular Die Set, to make a joyful, vibrant DIY Christmas Gift Tag! Keep reading to see the five different ways I used these shapes to create some colorful gift tags.

What you will need:

Can we talk about the Santa from the Thinlits Doodle Christmas Die Set!? I love this funky, happy St. Nick, who has his arms open wide to carry anything from gifts to candy canes to a mini Christmas tree. I paired Santa with our Festive Cardstock and Die Cut glittery snowflakes from our Sizzix Gold Opulent Cardstock Pack to add just the right amount of bling to the finished tag.

Then there is the option to create your own scene on your DIY Gift Tag. I Die Cut a small tag out of the polka dot Arctic Sky Patterned Paper to create the illusion of snowfall. I then Die Cut an additional tag of the same shape out of white cardstock and freehand cut some snowbanks to layer with the trees. Add a bit of white gel pen to the embossed portions of the tree die-cuts and you have yourself a wintery snowscape Christmas Gift Tag.

I'm a big fan of all over patterns and holly leaves with berries, so I couldn't resist creating a patterned tag of my own. I Die Cut a tag from another Arctic Sky patterned paper to give the background a bit of dimension. Then I Die Cut a variety of holly leaves and berries from bright and traditional holiday colors and placed them in a desired pattern. I found once they were laid out I didn't like the leaves being plain, so I added a bit of detailing with a white gel pen. You could also ink the edges of the leaves and berries to give them additional depth.

I often find inspiration for layout ideas when I see digital art and these stacked gifts were inspired by a Christmas scene I had seen online. I adhered each gift down, without applying adhesive to the bow portion of the tag so that I could easily slide in the next gift with ease as I was stacking them up the side of the Cherry Blossom tag. To add a bit of texture I cut some of the elements out of glitter cardstock from the Ivory Opulent Cardstock Pack.

Perhaps my favorite die in the whole set you ask? It's hands down the hanging retro ornaments. From the embossed detailing to the layering elements, I LOVE everything about this particular icon. I choose 4 colors that I wanted to blend together and die-cut all of the elements for each piece from that color. I then mixed and matched the colors across the 4 ornaments so that they all blended together. Again I emphasized the embossed details with a white gel pen and added a bit of Arctic Sky patterned paper behind the ornaments to really make them pop off of the tag base.

Finish off your tags with a bit of ribbon and baker's twine to tie them to your gifts! Customizing tags can be a nice way to add your own personalized touch to your upcoming holiday gift giving. The Doodle Christmas set was a perfect match for me as it offers so many different icons and allowed me the chance to try out a few different ideas.

I hope you enjoyed these DIY Christmas Gift Tags ideas, I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with for this year!

Until next time...happy crafting!
