The benefits of creative play

Alongside Science, Technology, English, and Maths, Art and Crafts (STEM) are key in a child's learning and development. Creative expression is important to a child's imagination and individuality, being able to express themselves through different materials and mediums builds children's confidence and allows them to explore the world around them.

5 reasons why creativity is important to children's development

1. Improves fine motor skills

Holding and using different tools like pencils, scissors and paintbrushes as well as activities such as cutting or tearing paper, smudging with crayons and chalks, and moulding clay and plasticine are ways of improving fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

2. Grows self-confidence

When children handmake something special whether with family or friends at school, it promotes self-confidence, a can-do attitude.

3. Builds concentration skills

Arts and crafts like coloring or cutting materials allow children the time to focus, building on their concentration skills. An important development skill useful as children continue to learn. As a calming activity arts and crafts can also promote mindfulness in children.

4. Problem-solving

Children who explore their creativity are more open to exploring new ideas and promotes out-of-the-box thinking and problem-solving in our areas, like in school.

5. It's fun!

Spending quality time together with family or friends exploring arts and crafts is so much fun! Creative play away from screens is a great way to connect with your little ones.
